WORLD HISTORY MAP - NOTICE (licences, sources, changes) ===================================================== This file is served with the page (https://junekihong.com/worldhistory/data/NOTICE.txt) and lives in the repository as data/NOTICE.txt. The repository root has a LICENSE file for the code. It is a plain statement of what is used and under which terms; it is not legal advice. Every border on the map is approximate and one version of a contested record. 1. BORDERS BEFORE 1000 CE - GPL-3.0 ------------------------------------- Files: data/index.json and data/.json for years before 1000 (the pages the viewer shows before 1000 CE). Source: Historical Basemaps by Andre Ourednik (aourednik), https://github.com/aourednik/historical-basemaps , licensed GNU GPL v3.0 (https://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl-3.0.html). The author describes the data as a work in progress of mixed provenance; every feature is marked BORDERPRECISION 1 (approximate). Changes made: snapshots read from the world_*.geojson files, geometry simplified (about 0.1 degree tolerance), coordinates rounded to 2 decimals, re-encoded into compact JSON, and merged with the hand-curated additions in section 6 (marked with an "x" key). Terms: these derived files are licensed GPL-3.0 as well. You may copy, modify and redistribute them under that licence. Corresponding source (GPL-3.0 section 1): the served JSON in data/ IS the form of the work intended for making modifications (plain JSON, openly fetchable). The scripts that produced it are build_data.py (HB snapshots -> pages), build_borders_extra.py, tools/year_fixes.py and tools/rebuild_all.py in the project repository. That repository is currently private (on the author's server); publishing a copy of the data and scripts is a pending action of the author, not yet done. Until then, ask the author via https://junekihong.com . 2. FAINT UNDERLAY 1000-1900 CE - GPL-3.0 ------------------------------------------ Files: data/1000.json ... data/1900.json (the Historical Basemaps pages from 1000 onward). Used only as a faint layer where Cliopatria leaves land unmapped. Same source, changes and terms as section 1. 3. BORDERS 1000-2024 CE - CC BY 4.0 ------------------------------------- Files: data/borders/ (manifest, chunks, land). Source: Cliopatria v0.21, Seshat Global History Databank, https://github.com/Seshat-Global-History-Databank/cliopatria , archived at https://zenodo.org/records/13363121 , described in https://doi.org/10.1038/s41597-025-04516-9 (Scientific Data). Licence: Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International, https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ . Changes made: simplified, filtered (relation and grouping rows removed, identical consecutive geometries merged), re-encoded (integer hundredths of a degree, delta-coded), clipped to the Natural Earth land mask, grown by up to 0.12 degree into unoccupied space, and merged with the additions in section 6. Not endorsed by the Seshat project. Years after 2024 show the 2024 borders. 4. COASTLINES - PUBLIC DOMAIN ------------------------------- Natural Earth 1:10m land (https://www.naturalearthdata.com/), public domain. Simplified. data/borders/land.json and land.d.json. 5. TEXT AND IMAGES FROM WIKIPEDIA - CC BY-SA ---------------------------------------------- Event, city and polity descriptions (data/descriptions*.json, data/ev/, data/cities/) are paraphrased by the project from Wikipedia articles; each carries a link to its article. Wikipedia text is licensed CC BY-SA 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/) - the paraphrases are offered under the same licence. Wikipedia authorship is attributed through the linked article history. Popup images are loaded live from Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons and keep their own licences (see the linked file page). Polity "attestation confidence" lines (data/polity_confidence.json) come from a research pass with Wikipedia links and are not a scholarly assessment. 6. DATA AUTHORED FOR THIS PROJECT --------------------------------- Hand-curated additional polities (src/borders_extra, each with its own source note), event records (src/events_*.json, data/ev/), city records (src/cities_*.json, data/cities/) with population figures (Chandler 1987, Modelski 2003, Wikipedia, national censuses; most cities with a population carry a short pop_note naming the basis of the figure, 4,387 of 4,781 city records have one, and the rest have no per-city source field; city descriptions and links are from Wikipedia, see section 5) and hand-read war fronts (data/fronts/, read from Wikipedia campaign maps and text, accurate to tens of kilometres). They were written by the project from general knowledge and reference works. Event dates were checked against Wikipedia for the prominent events and for most later additions; about 431 month and day dates were not. Where these records reuse facts or geometry from a source in sections 1-5, that source's terms apply to that part. Licence (chosen by the author, 2026-10-14): the authored records and geometry are CC BY 4.0 (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), credit "the World History map, junekihong.com". Exceptions: the descriptive text in those records is Wikipedia-derived and stays CC BY-SA 4.0 (section 5); parts that reuse a source in sections 1-5 keep that source's terms. See LICENSE-DATA.md. 7. CODE ------- index.html, build_*.py, tools/*.py, tests/ and the other code are licensed under the MIT licence (see LICENSE in the repository root). The author confirmed MIT on 2026-10-14. The code reads the data at run time and does not link it. Google Fonts load from Google's servers. 8. WHAT THIS MEANS IN PRACTICE ------------------------------ - Reuse pre-1000 borders (sections 1-2): under GPL-3.0, with this NOTICE and the changes noted. - Reuse 1000-2024 borders (section 3): under CC BY 4.0, credit Seshat/Cliopatria and say what changed. - Reuse text (section 5): under CC BY-SA, link Wikipedia. - Each border is approximate; do not use for legal, academic-citation or political purposes without checking the original sources.
